So much going on in the world, and so much work to do. Thinking on Aesop’s fable of the grasshopper and the ants, I wonder where squirrels fall on that spectrum, and I wonder about the fact that ants are quite communal compared to the fable’s hedonistic grasshopper.
Squirrels, arch nemesis and greatest ally in the work toward satisfying basic needs in mutual benefit. Just kidding, we are probably our own worst enemy 🙂
What is the wisdom of the archetypal squirrel? Plenty of play, also plenty of scrambling to get done what must be done. Nesting, burrying nuts, stashing more nuts, burrying more nuts…where’d that nut go? Better gather and burry more nuts. Do they procrastinate?
Crafty, they can penetrate most bird-feeder defenses. Brave, they won’t hesitate to holler and make a fuss if they don’t like what they see in their woodland home. “Squeak squeak squeak!” from their safe tree-side observatory, reminds me of the “Hey, halt.” from a peaceful warrior’s position of integrity and martial art. The squirrels are more flight than fight from our perspective, but they sure are good at it. I’ll end this rambling on that note, with an entertaining and shocking history podcast about America’s war on squirrels:
